FAQs

How do I access note-taking services for my courses?

Students must submit a note-taking request form each semester. Disability Services recommends that student submit their requests at the beginning of each semester and should allow up to two weeks for note-taking services to be coordinated for each class.

How are note-taking services coordinated? (undergrad and grad)
  1. Undergraduate students and Law Students:  Students submit their course schedule and note-taking request to Disability Services. DS then recruits a classmate to provide a copy of his or her notes for a DS student in the class. Please note that the student providing notes does not know the identity of the student requesting notes, as this process remains anonymous. DS will then send the DS student the copy of the notes once per week.

  2. Graduate students: Students submit their course schedule and note-taking request to their school’s liaison. The liaison then recruits a classmate to provide a copy of his or her notes for a student in the class. Please note that the student providing notes does not know the identity of the student requesting notes if the DS student prefers that the process remains anonymous. Delivery of notes will verify from school; please confirm delivery process with your school’s liaison.
I am registered with DS but not currently eligible for note-taking services, how do I request this?

If you would like to request note-taking services (or any other additional accommodations,) submit a Request for Supplemental Accommodations form.

When and how will I receive my notes?
  1. Undergraduate students:  Once per week, DS emails copies of notes for each class.

  2. Graduate students: You will coordinate the delivery of your notes with your school liaison.
What if there are problems with some of notes I am currently receiving?

**Please do not wait until the end of the semester to let DS know because it will leave little time to resolve issues and recruit a new note-taker, if needed. Also, if there is an issue, please speak with your coordinator or school liaison immediately as your coordinator or school liaison may not be aware of the various issues that might arise as they are not in the class. Please also expect that your note-taker might miss class. Although we ask the note-takers to find a back-up when they are absent, we ask for students to also think about having a back-up in each of your classes.

  1. Undergraduate students and law students: Contact your coordinator immediately via email at odsnotes@columbia.edu.

  2. Graduate students: Please contact your school liaison to discuss this issue.
How do I request note-taking services? (undergrad and grad)
  1. Undergraduate students: As soon as you have finalized your class schedule, please submit a Request for Note-Taking Service online form. The earlier that DS receives your request, the earlier in the semester DS can secure a note-taker for your classes.

  2. Graduate students: Contact your liaison as soon as possible to request note-taking services.

  3. Law students: Submit your requests via email to your DS Coordinator. Please be sure to include the course name, section number and your professor’s name for all of the courses for which you are requesting note-taking services. The earlier that DS receives your request, the earlier in the semester DS can secure a note-taker for your classes.
