Students have the option of scheduling an appointment:
All of our students have Primary Care Providers who are here to help them. Open Communicator is our secure online portal for students to access Medical Services. Students are automatically eligible to access Open Communicator once they have paid the Columbia Health Program fee and have activated their Columbia UNI and password.
**On occasion, students at our affiliate institutions will have to be entered manually into the system before they are able to access Open Communicator. If you feel you are eligible, but are having difficulty accessing this site, please call the appointment line for assistance.
When logged into Open Communicator, students are able to schedule, reschedule or cancel appointments, complete a pre-visit questionnaire, check who their Primary Care Provider (PCP) is or change their PCP, print out immunization records, send a secure message to a PCP or nurse, or request a prescription refill. New features are being added all the time, and students are encouraged to become familiar with this site and to check back frequently.
Medical Services is organized into three practice groups to provide accessible and well-coordinated care: Amsterdam, Broadway, and Morningside (all three are located within the same facility). Appointments are strongly encouraged so that we may be sensitive to your time constraints, and can be made by calling (212) 854-7426.
Everyone is assigned a PCP when they become eligible for Columbia Health. The assignment process is random and is done by computer. You can change your PCP at any time. If you have not already chosen a preferred provider, please let the person scheduling your appointment know. It is also helpful if you provide basic information about the reason for your intended visit (e.g., stomach pains, headache, travel assessment, pregnancy screening, prescription refill). We will work with you to arrange an appointment with your regular provider.
For acute illness or injury, students can also be seen without an appointment in the Urgent Care area during Medical Services scheduled clinical hours.
Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment. The Morningside Practice Group is located on the 3rd floor of John Jay Hall (go straight at entrance), the Amsterdam Practice Group is located on the 4th floor of John Jay Hall, East Wing (turn left at top of stairs), and the Broadway Practice Group is located on the 4th floor of John Jay Hall, West Wing (turn right at top of stairs.)
